Gut Punched: Alzheimer’s & Caregivers

Gut Punched: Alzheimer’s & Caregivers

Navigating the insidious illness of Alzheimer’s is something nobody asks for. The disease sneaks up on you and your loved one, and it feels like you’ve been sucker-punched in the gut when you get the diagnosis from a doctor. So many things race through your mind: why us? What do we do? We worked so hard to get to this point in life. We just moved here after we both worked for 30 years, sold our house up North, and retired to Florida to enjoy our “golden years”. It’s not fair! Who’s going to take care of her/him? I don’t know a thing about this illness. She’s always done the cooking; I don’t even know how to boil water. He's always taken care of me and everything else, like Finances. I don’t even drive! And it goes on and on. Facing this disease will bring you to your knees. Once you get over the initial shock (GUT PUNCHED), the questions and fears take hold. Where do we turn for help? Who do I call? What do I do? How do you take care of someone with Alzheimer's? Are there support groups? And questions like these keep coming. I am a caregiver. I wasn’t before. Well, not this kind of caregiver. My wife was officially diagnosed in January of 2018. I had a sneaking suspicion that she might have something like this about 2 years earlier. So, when I brought it to my Neurologist, he sent us to a very nice Psychologist who specializes in testing patients to determine more accurately what is going on. It was a question-and-answer session, followed by a very detailed testing procedure that usually takes three or more hours. The patient must complete the test, which comprises questions, simple actions, and memory tests.

Then give them a couple of numbers or words, and move on, returning to the numbers or words a short time later. So, moving forward, I asked the same questions mentioned earlier. What are my options? So I “sucked it up”-Manned up, so to speak. It's part of the deal for better or worse, right? So began my quest for information on support groups, doctors, and anything I could get my hands on. It's been 6 years, and I am still looking for anything that will help me crawl along this uncharted path to enlightenment. I was very fortunate to live in a city with numerous resources to draw on.

Most importantly, it's a place named after someone who suffered from Alzheimer’s. His wife provided the money to start the Alvin Dubin Center: The Dubin Center for short. Their mission is to achieve caregiver health, strength, and resilience by providing education, information, hope, and compassion. And boy do they. I leaned on them for everything I could find. Took all kinds of classes to learn what I needed to do to be the caregiver I have to be. Their caregiver class took about 6 weeks. The material we learned from and the instructors were top-notch. I still go back to the notes I took and the books we used, both as a refresher and for inspiration. Hopefully, wherever you are listening to this, there will be a place like the Dubin Center. If not, don’t despair. The info is out there. That’s what this podcast is about. We want to share our resources, our experiences, our heartbreak, and our little victories. From time to time, we’d like to bring in Physicians, Nurses, Experts, and people like you and me who are going through this disease with our loved ones, willing to share their journeys. The first thing that really stuck with me, and hopefully it will be with you. If you are a caregiver, you must first take care of yourself. Because this is not a sprint, but a marathon, and if you are run down, get sick, or worse.... Who’s going to take care of your spouse, mother, father, or child? Think about that for a few seconds. It’s you, the Caregiver. It’s me, the Caregiver. That’s why we’re here. Gut Punched: Alzheimer’s & Caregivers! Thanks for joining us...now let's get going.

Gut Punched: EP 117 - What Do Hurricanes & Caregivers Have in Common?

What could hurricanes possibly have in common with Alzheimer’s caregiving?

More than you might think.

In Episode 117 of GutPunched: Alzheimer’s & Caregivers, Jeff Edwards takes a timely look at the surprising parallels between preparing for a hurricane and navigating the unpredictable world of Alzheimer’s caregiving.

Hurricanes can change direction. They can intensify with little warning. They require preparation, patience, a good support system, and the understanding that some things are simply beyond our control.

For Alzheimer’s caregivers, every day can bring something different. There are good days, difficult days, unexpected changes, emergencies, exhaustion, and sometimes a feeling that you're facing the storm alone.

Just as we prepare for hurricane season before storms arrive, caregivers can prepare for difficult situations before they arise. That means having plans for medications, medical appointments, finances, respite care, and emergencies, and knowing who to call when you need help.

And later in the program, Dr. John Huffaker joins us for another edition of “What’s New with Alzheimer’s.”

This week’s listener question focuses on Leqembi: After experiencing ARIA while taking Leqembi, what options might be available moving forward?

Dr. Huffaker discusses ARIA — Amyloid-Related Imaging Abnormalities —

Gut Punched: Alzheimer’s and Caregivers EP 116 - Dr. AmberRose Reale

For many caregivers, the words "memory care" can bring fear, uncertainty, and countless questions. What is it really like? When is the right time? Will my loved one receive compassionate care?

In Episode 116, host Jeff Edwards sits down with Dr. AmberRose Reale from Lee Health's Memory Care Program for an honest conversation about the services they provide and how they help individuals living with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.

This episode is especially personal. Jeff shares that his own wife's condition has changed, and she will soon begin receiving care through Lee Health's Memory Care Program. Like many caregivers, he admits he knew very little about the program before reaching out. What he discovered gave him something every caregiver needs: peace of mind and hope.

Together, they discuss what families can expect from a comprehensive memory care program, how specialized care can improve quality of life, and why asking questions early can make all the difference.

Also in this episode:

• Dr. John Huffaker returns with "What's New with Alzheimer's," answering an important listener question: How many of the Alzheimer's treatments promoted on social media are legitimate and how many are simply scams?

Gut Punched: Alzheimer’s and Caregivers EP 115 - Real Talk. Real Help. Real Hope.

There’s a lot of discussion, and sometimes confusion, surrounding amyloid plaques, tau buildup, and the newer Alzheimer’s treatments designed to target amyloid. In this episode of Gut Punched: Alzheimer’s and Caregivers, we take a closer look at some fascinating research that may help us better understand the connection.

A brain autopsy provided researchers with interesting information about what may happen after amyloid plaque is removed from the brain, including its possible effect on tau buildup and neurodegeneration. What might this tell us about Alzheimer’s disease, and about treatments such as Leqembi and Kisunla? We’ll break it down without the hype and try to make the science a little easier to understand.

Then, Dr. John Huffaker joins us for another edition of “What’s New with Alzheimer’s.” This week, he answers a listener question: What’s the difference between Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia? While the conditions can share some symptoms, there are important differences caregivers and families should understand.

We’ll also update you on the 2026 Walk to End Alzheimer’s and talk about ways caregivers, families, and friends can get involved.

And because caregiving is about much more than medical information, we return to the Five Tenets of GutPunched: take care of yourself, don’t try to do this alone, accept help when it’s offered, create a help signal with your loved one, and remember that caregiving, love it or hate it, is your life until it isn’t. Give it your all.

We also highlight resources available to caregivers and families, including The Dubin Center; Zacharia Frey Estate Planning & Elder Law Attorneys; and memory care services available through Lee Health.

It’s another episode built around what we believe in at GutPunched:

Gut Punched: Alzheimer’s and Caregivers EP 112 - Maintaining Relationships

In this episode of Gut Punched, Alzheimer's and Caregivers, we dive deep into the emotional and practical aspects of caregiving for loved ones with Alzheimer's disease. I, Jeff Edwards, your host, emphasize that caregiving can feel overwhelming and isolating, but it's crucial to remember you are not alone on this journey.

We reflect on the positive feedback from our previous episode featuring Dr. Rie Aihara, who discussed the intriguing connection between gut health and brain function. If you missed it, you can catch up anytime at gutpunch.com.

Today's discussion centers around maintaining relationships with loved ones affected by Alzheimer's, drawing insights from a WebMD article. We explore how the disease alters emotional and behavioral responses, underscoring the need for caregivers to adapt their expectations and approaches. Dr. Virginia Wadley Bradley's insights remind us that understanding the disease is key to providing empathy and support.

I share five practical tips for relationship-centered care, including recognizing familiar sparks of joy in your loved one, rolling with the unpredictability of Alzheimer's symptoms, redefining expectations, maintaining closeness with family, and, most importantly, taking care of yourself as a caregiver.

We also hear from Dr. John Huffaker, who addresses a listener's concern about an elderly father's increasing forgetfulness, highlighting the importance of consulting a neurologist when memory issues affect daily life.

Lastly, I provide updates on the upcoming Walk to End Alzheimer's events and share valuable resources for caregivers, including support networks and community programs. Remember, this journey may be challenging, but with the right support and knowledge, we can navigate it together. Thank you for joining me today, and I hope you find encouragement and hope in our discussion.

Gut Punched: EP 111 - Understanding the Gut-Brain Connection with Dr. Rie Aihara

In Episode 111 of Gut Punched: Alzheimer’s and Caregivers, host Jeff Edwards welcomes Dr. Rie Aihara from Revitalize for an eye-opening conversation about one of today's fastest-growing areas of Alzheimer's research, the gut-brain connection.

Researchers are discovering that the trillions of bacteria living inside our digestive system, known as the microbiome, may play a much bigger role in overall brain health than anyone once imagined. We'll explore how an unhealthy gut can contribute to chronic inflammation throughout the body, why inflammation has become an important focus in Alzheimer's research, and how your digestive health may influence what happens in your brain.

Does eating junk food cause Alzheimer's? No, but the foods we eat, the balance of healthy bacteria in our gut, and our overall lifestyle may all play important roles in maintaining brain health.

Dr. Aihara explains the science in an easy-to-understand way while offering practical tips that caregivers and families can begin using today to support better gut health.

Also in this episode:

• Dr. John Huffaker returns with another edition of What's New with Alzheimer's.

• We answer a listener question about managing agitation in Alzheimer's patients.

• We begin sharing information about the 2026 Walk to End Alzheimer's and how you can become involved in your community.

Whether you're caring for someone with Alzheimer's, interested in protecting your own brain health, or simply curious about the latest research, this conversation offers hope, practical advice, and a fascinating look at where Alzheimer's science is headed.

Gut Punched: Alzheimer’s and Caregivers EP 110 - Hope Without Hype

In Episode 110 of Gut Punched: Alzheimer’s and Caregivers, host Jeff Edwards takes a closer look at one of the most important questions facing caregivers today:

What Alzheimer's research is actually helping patients, and what may be getting oversold?

With new studies, treatments, and headlines appearing almost daily, it can be difficult to separate genuine progress from unrealistic promises. Jeff explores the concept of "Hope Without Hype," using information gathered via AI tools such as ChatGPT and Grok as a starting point to discuss current Alzheimer's research and emerging treatment options.

You'll also hear about a promising new copper-based drug that researchers believe may help remove toxic proteins and plaques from the brain by activating the brain's own immune cells, called microglia.

Plus:

• The Five Caregiver Rules that have become the foundation of GutPunched
• Why caregiver support groups remain one of the most valuable resources available
• An update from Dr. John Huffaker in "What's New With Alzheimer's"
• A listener question about Posterior Cortical Atrophy (PCA), a rare form of Alzheimer's disease that affects visual processing and perception

Gut Punched: Alzheimer’s and Caregivers EP 108 - The Alzheimer’s Experience Part 2

In this episode of Gut Punched: Alzheimer’s and Caregivers, host Jeff Edwards returns to the conversation with Dr. Lauren P. Brown from The Alzheimer’s Experience for Part 2 of an insightful and engaging interview that caregivers won’t want to miss.

Part 1 originally aired back in Episode 102, and yes, Jeff admits the delay getting to Part 2 is on him. Between recording interviews, editing audio, producing the podcast, and trying to make every guest sound as professional and easy to listen to as possible, the process can take hours… sometimes as many as 12 hours for a single episode.

But good conversations are worth the wait.

Jeff and Dr. Brown continue their candid discussion about the Alzheimer’s journey, caregiving realities, and emerging possibilities in treatment and support.

One topic that may surprise listeners: Could Ultrasound Therapy become a breakthrough treatment, or even a cure, for Alzheimer’s disease? We’ll explore the growing conversation around this developing technology.

Plus, Dr. John Huffaker returns with another edition of “What’s New with Alzheimer’s,” where we look at current developments, research, and caregiver information making headlines in the Alzheimer’s world.

And we answer another listener question this time focusing on Men vs. Women and how Alzheimer’s may affect them differently.

Gut Punched: Alzheimer’s and Caregivers EP 103 - Glenna Hecht "How Old Are You Today”

In this powerful and deeply personal episode of Gut Punched: Alzheimer’s and Caregivers, host Jeff Edwards sits down with author and caregiver advocate Glenna Hecht for one of the most engaging and practical conversations the podcast has featured to date.

What happens when dementia begins changing memories, personalities, and relationships, but a mother and daughter refuse to let it destroy their connection? The answer became a simple yet transformative relationship game that inspired Glenna’s book,” How Old Are You Today”.

Jeff admits this conversation broke one of the podcast’s usual rules: keeping episodes to around 15 minutes. Why? Because there was simply too much insight, encouragement, and usable information to leave on the cutting room floor.

Together, Jeff and Glenna explore:

  • How caregivers can maintain emotional connection even as memory fades

  • Why meaningful engagement matters more than “perfect” communication

  • The real-life story behind the relationship game that changed everything

  • Practical tools families can begin using immediately

  • Encouragement for overwhelmed caregivers who feel isolated or exhausted

  • Why moments of joy, humor, and humanity still matter deeply in dementia care

Listeners will also hear:

  • Additional insights from the latest Alzheimer's Association Facts & Figures Report, focusing on prevalence and caregiving

  • Another installment of “What’s New with Alzheimer’s,” featuring Dr. John Huffaker answering listener questions.

This episode is informative, emotional, practical, and hopeful, a reminder that connection is still possible, even when memory changes everything.

Gut Punched: Alzheimer’s and Caregivers EP 102 - How to Protect Your Brain Health

In this episode, host Jeff Edwards begins with a powerful fact from information shared by the Alzheimer’s Association:

99% of people say they value brain health as much as, or more than, physical health, but only 9% say they know a lot about ways to maintain brain health.

That gap is the focus of this episode.

We connect that fact to information from the article “Most Americans Don’t Know How to Protect Brain Health.” This episode also features Part 1 of Jeff’s interview with Dr. Lauren Brown, PhD, from The Alzheimer’s Experience. Dr. Brown teaches a clinically grounded model called ProMa, designed to help caregivers, families, and care teams understand what to expect and how to respond with dignity.

Gut Punched: Alzheimer’s and Caregivers EP 100 - The Savvy Caregiver

In Episode 100 of GutPunched: Alzheimer’s and Caregivers, host Jeff Edwards explores a powerful and often unspoken question: What is the true goal of caregiving? Jeff shares insights from The Savvy Caregiver Course manual, offering perspective, validation, and encouragement for those navigating the emotional and physical demands of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.

In the “What’s New with Alzheimer’s?” segment, Dr. John Huffaker addresses a listener's question about the progression of swallowing difficulties in Alzheimer’s patients, an important and often challenging stage for caregivers to understand and manage.

The episode also includes heartfelt gratitude to supporters, sponsors, and organizations that have helped make the podcast possible, including healthcare partners, advocacy groups, and behind-the-scenes contributors.

To commemorate this milestone, Jeff shares a deeply personal gift: an original song titled “I Still Choose You.” Inspired by both his wife and his caregiving experience, the song is meant to give caregivers something meaningful to share with their loved ones, a reminder that even in the face of loss, connection and love endure.

This 100th episode is more than a celebration; it’s a tribute to resilience, compassion, and the unique journey every caregiver walks. As Jeff reflects, we may not be in the same boat, but we are all navigating the same river.

Gut Punched: Alzheimer’s and Caregivers EP 98 - Lewy Body Dementia

On episode 98 of GutPunched: Alzheimer’s and Caregivers, host Jeff Edwards talks about one of the most challenging and emotional realities of caregiving: changing roles. Jeff reflects on how responsibilities shift over time in the Alzheimer’s journey, and how those shifts impact identity, relationships, and emotional well-being.

Jeff shares a personal moment of stepping away for needed rest and connection, reinforcing Rule #1 of the show’s caregiving philosophy: you must take care of yourself first. From there, the episode explores how caregivers gradually take on new duties once handled by their loved ones, often without warning or preparation.

The episode also introduces listeners to Lewy Body Dementia, offering a foundational look at how it compares to and differs from Alzheimer’s disease. This “toe in the water” discussion helps caregivers recognize overlapping symptoms and unique challenges.

Additionally, Dr. John Huffaker returns for the “What’s New in Alzheimer’s?” segment to answer a listener's question about emerging non-drug treatments and research developments.

As always, Jeff reinforces the show’s Five Tenets, practical, hard-earned rules designed to help caregivers survive and navigate this journey with strength and support.

This episode is a reminder that caregiving is not static; it evolves, stretches you, and sometimes gut-punches you, but you don’t have to face it alone.

Gut Punched: Alzheimer’s and Caregivers EP 97 - The Stigma Surrounding Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

In this episode of Gut Punched: Alzheimer’s and Caregivers, host Jeff Edwards opens with a candid and emotional reflection on how stigma impacts not only those living with the disease but also the caregivers who support them. While Alzheimer’s itself is not contagious, the reactions it provokes, awkwardness, distance, silence, and misunderstanding, can create a profound sense of isolation.

This episode dives deep into the emotional and social consequences of stigma. From the looks and assumptions people make to the lack of understanding at critical moments, stigma can shape how individuals are treated and whether they feel safe seeking help. Drawing on both lived experience and broader conversations happening in the Alzheimer’s community, Jeff brings honesty, clarity, and urgency to the discussion, without sugarcoating the reality.

In addition, the episode explores:

  • Why combating stigma is essential

  • Five actionable ways to overcome it

  • The physical and emotional symptoms of stress caused by stigma

  • Practical tips to manage that stress

  • Support resources available to caregivers and families

As always, the show reinforces its Five Tenets of caregiving, practical, real-world principles designed to help caregivers survive and sustain themselves through one of life’s most challenging roles.

This is a raw, honest, and necessary conversation about how stigma silently shapes the Alzheimer’s journey, and why it’s time to confront it head-on.

Gut Punched: Alzheimer’s and Caregivers EP 96 - This isn’t just about memory loss.

This isn’t just about memory loss.
It’s about watching someone fade while you’re still holding on.
It’s about the confusion, the grief, the quiet moments that hit the hardest… and the person you’re forced to become in the middle of it all.

Episode 96 of GutPunched features a deeply moving and candid conversation with Suzy McNamara, whose story unfolds with raw honesty, emotional depth, and powerful vulnerability. In this episode, Suzy opens up about her personal journey, sharing experiences that shaped her identity, tested her resilience, and ultimately redefined her sense of self.

What makes this interview especially compelling is the level of trust and openness Suzy brings to the conversation. She reveals moments that are rarely spoken aloud, struggles, turning points, and emotional truths that resonate on a human level. There are moments that are difficult, moments that are inspiring, and moments that will stay with listeners long after the episode ends.

This is not just an interview; it’s an intimate look at what it means to endure, reflect, and grow. Episode 96 stands out as one of the most revealing and emotionally impactful conversations on GutPunched to date.

Gut Punched: Alzheimer’s and Caregivers EP 95 - Tax Deductions and Credits for Caregivers

Caregiving is many things: rewarding, exhausting, emotional, and often expensive. In Episode 95 of GutPunched, host Jeff Edwards tackles a topic many caregivers overlook but that they absolutely need to understand: tax deductions and tax credits that may help them financially.

With tax season approaching faster than most of us would like, Jeff discusses several potential tax benefits caregivers may qualify for, along with common myths and facts that often confuse families caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.

Of course, no episode of GutPunched would be complete without the humor and honesty caregivers rely on to survive the journey. Jeff reflects on Florida weather, the realities of caregiver life (like hoping for a full night of sleep and a cup of coffee that stays hot), and the importance of attending caregiver support groups, whether in person or on Zoom.

The episode also includes another segment of “What’s New in Alzheimer’s?” featuring Dr. John Huffaker, in which a listener's question is addressed, and new developments in Alzheimer’s care and research are discussed.

Jeff also reminds listeners of the Five Tenets of Caregiving, practical rules every caregiver should remember, including taking care of yourself first and building a support system to help you navigate the long journey of caring for someone with memory loss.

This episode is a must-listen for caregivers looking for practical information, financial insights, emotional validation, and a reminder that they are not alone.

 Gut Punched: Alzheimer’s & Caregivers
Gut Punched: Alzheimer’s and Caregivers EP 94 - Is a Research Study Right for You?

Caregiving for someone with Alzheimer’s rarely happens in neat, manageable steps. Challenges pile up, crises overlap, and caregivers often find themselves pushing through exhaustion, confusion, and difficult decisions, sometimes all in the same week.

In this episode of GutPunched: Alzheimer’s and Caregivers, the conversation turns to a question many families eventually hear from doctors, friends, or support groups:
“Have you considered a research study?”

For caregivers and families facing Alzheimer’s disease, those words can trigger a flood of emotions and questions. Is participating in a research study a path to hope? Is it pressure to try something experimental? Is it safe? And how do you know if it’s the right choice for your loved one?

In Episode 94, we take an honest gut-check on Alzheimer’s research studies, what they actually involve, what caregivers should expect, and how to evaluate whether participation is right for your situation.

Joining the discussion is Dr. John Huffaker of the Neuropsychiatric Research Center (NPRC), who shares insights into how clinical trials work, what protections exist for patients, and how families can make informed decisions when exploring research opportunities.

We also continue our regular segment “What’s New in Alzheimer’s?”, where Dr. Huffaker answers a listener's question about the latest developments in Alzheimer’s care and research.

Before diving into the conversation, the episode also highlights the reality that many caregivers know too well: sometimes life throws everything at you at once. From health setbacks to caregiving stress, perseverance becomes part of daily life.

As always, the show revisits the Five Tenets of Caregiving, guiding principles that remind caregivers to prioritize their own well-being, build a support network, and accept help when it’s offered.

Whether you’re exploring clinical trials, trying to understand Alzheimer’s research, or simply navigating the emotional rollercoaster of caregiving, this episode provides practical insight and a compassionate perspective.

 Gut Punched: Alzheimer’s & Caregivers
Gut Punched: - Why Can’t I Remember? The “Old” Man vs Woman, Myth vs Fact?

In Episode 93 of GutPunched: Alzheimer’s & Caregivers, host Jeff Edwards dives into questions that many caregivers and families quietly struggle with: “Why can’t I remember?” Is it normal aging, stress, or something more? Jeff unpacks the emotional weight behind memory lapses and how fear can sometimes speak louder than facts.

We also revisit the age-old debate: “Old Man vs. Woman,” separating cultural myths from medical realities regarding memory, cognitive decline, and caregiving roles. Are women more likely to develop Alzheimer’s? Do men experience symptoms differently? What’s biology, and what’s misunderstanding?

And in today’s world of online overload, we tackle Myth vs. Fact to help caregivers avoid being misled by misinformation, exaggerated claims, and “miracle cures.” Knowledge is power, especially when emotions are running high.

Plus, we answer another listener question in “What’s New in Alzheimer’s?” with Dr. John Huffaker, bringing clarity to current research and developments in memory care.

As always, Jeff reinforces the show’s Five Tenets of Caregiving, practical, real-world guidance for surviving (and sustaining) the caregiving journey.

If you're caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or worried about your own memory, this episode is your reminder: You are not alone, and facts matter.
