Chester's Choice

Originally Aired: July 6, 1958

In Gunsmoke #326, "Chester's Choice," Chester stumbles into a deadly dilemma while fishing outside Dodge City. Dozing in the brush, he overhears three outlaws planning to rob the bank at three o'clock that afternoon. When the gang discovers him, their ruthless leader Milt gives Chester an impossible ultimatum: get Marshal Matt Dillon out of town during the robbery, or watch Doc Adams and Kitty Russell die. Threatened with the blood of his friends on his hands, Chester reluctantly agrees to the outlaws' demands.

Back in Dodge, Chester desperately tries to lure Matt out of town without revealing the truth. He awkwardly attempts to convince Kitty to go riding with the marshal, then tries persuading Doc Adams to take Matt on a medical call to the country. When both efforts fail, Chester makes increasingly frantic attempts to get Matt interested in a fishing trip to Reed Creek. As the clock ticks toward three o'clock, Chester must decide between his loyalty to the marshal and the safety of the people he cares about most, knowing that any choice he makes could have fatal consequences.

That very night, someone ambushes him outside the marshal's office, and Matt decides to play dead to draw out whoever wants him killed.

With Chester spreading word of the marshal's death throughout Dodge, Matt waits in Doc Adams' office to see who will reveal themselves. Hot Horse Hyatt

Originally Aired: June 8, 1958

In Gunsmoke #322, "Hot Horse Hyatt," Marshal Matt Dillon faces a potential lynching when Doc Adams alerts him that Del Breggan and his ranch hands have cornered a stranger at the livery stable with a rope. The accused man, Jesse Hyatt, insists he purchased two horses honestly from a bearded trader in Wichita, but Breggan recognizes them as his own blooded stock that disappeared from his ranch a month earlier. Despite Jesse's claims of innocence, he has no proof and can barely remember what the trader looked like, leaving him in a dire situation as he awaits trial.

The tension escalates when Breggan threatens to take the law into his own hands if Judge Bent doesn't act quickly. Marshal Dillon must navigate not only the question of Jesse's guilt or innocence, but also confront Breggan's brutal frontier mentality and its effects on his son Tommy, who visits the jail to apologize to Jesse for his father's violent behavior. Quarter Horse

Originally Aired: June 1, 1958

In Gunsmoke #321, "Quarter Horse," an elderly rancher named Mr. Thatcher faces relentless ridicule from Ed Butler and his cronies at the Long Branch Saloon over his peculiar-looking quarter horse colt. After Marshal Matt Dillon intervenes to stop Butler's bullying, Thatcher approaches the marshal with a bold proposition: he wants to challenge Butler to a grudge race, wagering his entire ranch against Butler's claim of having the finest horses around Dodge. Despite the marshal's reluctance to get involved in personal disputes, he agrees to hold the stakes and ensure a fair competition. Thatcher passionately defends his unconventional colt, describing its low-slung build and powerful muscles, insisting it's the fastest horse west of St. Louis.

As race day arrives and half the town gathers at the river flats to watch, tensions escalate. Butler surprises everyone by entering a thoroughbred instead of a cow pony, and Thatcher begins drinking heavily. When Butler coldly reminds Thatcher that the wager includes not just the ranch but the prized colt itself, the old man realizes the devastating stakes of what he's risked. With Doc Adams and Mr. Hightower serving as judges and Chester preparing to fire the starting gun, the race is set to begin with everything Thatcher owns hanging in the balance.

Marshal Matt Dillon soon encounters a runaway horse that's been savagely beaten with a bull whip, its hide torn and bloody. The situation escalates when Don Marco Velasquez arrives in Dodge from Chihuahua, Mexico, desperately searching for his young bride Maria, whom he describes as small "like the little bird." He reveals that Bull Taggart kidnapped her from his hacienda three weeks earlier, and now the Mexican rancher seeks satisfaction as a matter of honor. The young man and his friend ride into Dodge firing their guns and declaring their intention to tear the town apart. Matt jails Beulow to protect himself and give the man time to cool off.

The Squaw

Originally Aired: April 27, 1958

In Gunsmoke #316, "The Squaw," Marshal Matt Dillon breaks up a saloon fight between young Cully Tate and his friend Ambrose, only to discover the dispute stems from a deeply personal matter. Cully is consumed with shame and anger because his father, rancher Hardiman Tate, has returned from Texas with an Arapaho woman named Natasia, whom he married in Indian custom. The young man's bitterness runs deep - he considers his father a "squaw man" and believes the arrangement dishonors his late mother's memory. Cully has even taken to wearing a gun in defiance, ready to defend what he sees as his family's tarnished reputation.

Matt rides out to the Tate ranch with Chester to address the situation, where they meet the young Arapaho woman and find Hardiman genuinely happy for the first time since his first wife's death. The Marshal points out that while the couple considers themselves married, their union isn't legal by white law, and he could technically send Natasia back to the Darlington agency. Instead, Matt suggests a solution that might satisfy everyone: a proper church wedding in Dodge City. Hardiman agrees, and plans are set for a Saturday ceremony, though Matt remains uneasy about how young Cully will react to his father's decision.

In Gunsmoke #315, "The Partners," a dangerous carnival act comes to Dodge City when two performers named Grover Cranston and Little Maury arrive with a deadly exhibition. The partners shoot tin cans off each other's heads for money, drawing crowds eager to witness what could be a fatal mistake. Marshal Matt Dillon shuts down their first performance in the streets, but the duo moves just outside town limits to continue their risky shows. While their poker game prospers and the crowds grow larger, tensions begin to rise between the partners when the widow Effie Gans enters the picture.

As the situation develops, both Doc Adams and Chester find themselves drawn to watch the dangerous act, while Kitty observes the growing complications. The marshal becomes concerned that the partners might be scheming to fleece the widow, who has suddenly sold her house for cash. However, Doc suggests the situation might be more complicated, comparing Effie Gans to a pretty rattlesnake. When Little Maury confronts the widow about his feelings and hints at darker possibilities, Matt Dillon realizes something dangerous is brewing beyond just the deadly shooting exhibition.

Yorky

Originally Aired: April 6, 1958

In Gunsmoke #313, "Yorky," Marshal Matt Dillon faces an unusual challenge when rancher Mr. Brandt arrives in Dodge City with a troubling problem. During an Arapaho horse raid on his ranch, Brandt's son captured a young boy—no more than twelve years old—who turns out to be white, not Indian. The wild child, who calls himself Yorky, has lived with the Arapaho tribe since his parents were killed in a raid years ago. Now wounded in the leg from the skirmish, Yorky thinks and acts like an Indian warrior, believing he must make a "big coup" by taking a scalp or stealing horses to redeem himself for exposing the raiding party. He's attempted to kill Brandt twice already, and the rancher refuses to keep him any longer.

Matt reluctantly brings the boy back to Dodge, where Doc Adams treats his infected wound. As Yorky recovers in Doc's office, he remains defiant and dangerous, understanding only the Arapaho way of kill or be killed. When Doc is called away, Matt enlists Kitty Russell to help care for the boy, hoping a woman's touch might reach him where men have failed. The challenge becomes how to save this young white child from himself and help him understand he's returned to his own people.

Though she's of legal age and adamant about not returning to New York, her father proves ruthless in his methods to force compliance.

When Taggart discovers his daughter won't come willingly, he unleashes his financial influence on Dodge City. Through telegrams to banks and suppliers back East, he systematically destroys any means of employment for his daughter, leaving Kitty Russell with no choice but to fire her or face financial ruin. As the pressure mounts and tensions escalate between the hot-headed Burl Alden and the cold, calculating Taggart, Marshal Dillon watches the situation grow increasingly dangerous, knowing that money can be a more powerful weapon than any gun.

Originally Aired: March 23, 1958

In Gunsmoke #311, "Indian," Marshal Matt Dillon and Chester discover a Pawnee man who has been brutally murdered, shot in both knees and left to crawl before being killed. When the victim's stoic widow appears at the scene, Matt is disturbed by the cruelty of the killing. Back in Dodge, a bitter frontiersman named Eggard overhears Matt discussing the murder and openly admits to a sixteen-year campaign of killing Indians. Consumed by hatred since Pawnees killed his wife and kidnapped his infant son years ago, Eggard shows no remorse and insists no badge will stop his vendetta.

The widow and her brother soon arrive in Dodge, having tracked Eggard to town. They demand Matt either arrest and execute the killer or hand him over for Indian justice. Though Matt suspects Eggard is guilty, he lacks the legal proof needed for a conviction. A young man named Sonny Garnett calls out Marshal Matt Dillon from the jail, standing brazenly in the middle of the street with a rifle and demanding the marshal come out and fight. Rather than kill the boy, Matt has Chester shoot the gun from his hand. Under questioning, the defiant youngster refuses to reveal who sent him, but Dillon soon tricks him into exposing his partner: Nate Schuyler, a notorious outlaw wanted for train robberies, bank holdups, and murder. Matt realizes Schuyler is using the boy to eliminate the local law before moving in on Dodge City, a cowardly tactic the veteran lawman has seen before.

After locking Sonny up, Marshal Dillon makes a calculated gamble by releasing the boy and having him followed, hoping the youngster will lead them straight to Schuyler. When Doc Adams spots Sonny at Wilbur Jonas' store trying to buy a gun, he rushes to alert Matt about the supposed jailbreak, only to learn it was all part of the marshal's plan to flush out the dangerous outlaw.

His humiliation in front of the whole town sets the stage for deadly revenge.

The next morning brings worse news when Mrs. Stafford frantically summons Doc Adams after her husband Earl is brutally beaten behind their store by Cloud Marsh and his two brothers. As Doc tends to the unconscious showman, Marshal Dillon reveals he knows Earl Stafford's real identity—he's actually Ernie Stubblefield, a former gunfighter from the Red River with four killings to his name and prison time behind him. Doc Adams and Chester had tried to intervene earlier, risking their own lives to protect the helpless stranger.

Matt arranges for Pendle to work at the Long Branch saloon, sweeping floors and living in a back shack. Matt arrives to find the desperate situation and, after speaking with the barely conscious Lucy herself, supports Doc's decision to move her to his office for the operation.

Aaron grows increasingly angry over being separated from his wife and barred from Doc's office while she's prepared for surgery. After the hanging, Jennings arrives with the truth: Tillman was innocent, simply returning the animals he'd found running wild. Jake Kaiser delivers the news to Tillman's widow with cold detachment, dismissing the tragedy as a joke gone wrong.

Three weeks later, Marshal Matt Dillon remains haunted by the lynching he couldn't prevent. Moo Moo Raid

Originally Aired: January 19, 1958

In Gunsmoke #302, “Moo Moo Raid,” a missing cow nearly sparks a range war in Dodge City. When trail boss Tush Lee discovers that Oni Hager—and his legendary swimming cow, Ida Belle—have vanished, suspicion falls squarely on rival cattleman Bert Collins. With thousands of dollars riding on which herd crosses the river first, tempers flare fast and talk of murder spreads through town.

Oni’s ramshackle cabin shows signs of a violent struggle, and before long both outfits are ready to settle matters with guns instead of proof. Marshal Matt Dillon finds himself caught between pride, profit, and panic, trying to keep two stubborn men from turning Dodge into a battleground over what appears to be foul play.

But as rumors swell and fists clench, the truth proves far simpler—and far more ridiculous—than anyone expects. In the end, Ida Belle’s unexpected “vacation” in Kiowa Meadows cools hot tempers and saves lives, reminding everyone that sometimes the greatest dangers in the West come not from outlaws—but from assumptions.

Second Son

Originally Aired: January 12, 1958

In Gunsmoke #301, “Second Son,” an English drifter named Sedgely Carstairs rides into Dodge City determined to win back the horse he lost in a poker game to the ruthless Pete Newson. Polite, soft-spoken, and stubbornly honorable, Carstairs seems out of place in the rough Kansas cowtown. But beneath his refined manners lies a wounded pride—and a quiet desperation to reclaim what he sees as his dignity.

Rumors spread that Carstairs is wealthy, fueled by bank drafts from England and his willingness to keep playing cards despite mounting losses. When Newson returns to town with his gang, greed overtakes opportunity. Instead of simply beating Carstairs at the table, they lure him away, intent on taking everything.

Marshal Matt Dillon’s instincts prove right—but he arrives too late to save the earnest “second son” who never quite learned the brutal rules of the frontier. In a grim and sobering end, Newson discovers that murder brings him nothing but three dollars—and the weight of a wasted life.

A tragic meditation on honor, pride, and the harsh cost of misunderstanding both fortune and men.
