In Gunsmoke #294, “Odd Man Out,” Marshal Matt Dillon investigates the mysterious disappearance of Bertha Huggins, a farm wife who has been married thirty-seven years to her aging husband, Cyrus. When Cyrus reports that Bertha has suddenly run off, the story doesn’t quite ring true—but neither does the idea that the devoted couple could simply part ways.
As weeks pass without a trace, Dillon’s search uncovers unsettling contradictions in Cyrus’s account. A traveling homesteader brings new evidence to light, leading the marshal back to the lonely farmstead where memory, grief, and denial have become dangerously intertwined. What Dillon discovers is not murder, but something perhaps more tragic: a man unable to face life after loss.
A quiet, deeply human episode exploring aging, devotion, and the fragile line between sorrow and madness on the frontier.
Cast: William Conrad, Parley Baer, Howard McNear, Georgia Ellis
