Officials say bird flu caused the death of a bald eagle named Jackie who had become an internet sensation and a symbol of the species’ recovery in California. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife said in a news release Wednesday that a necropsy and additional testing found that the primary underlying cause of Jackie’s death in August was highly pathogenic avian influenza. In the weeks leading up to her death, she was being treated at the Ojai Raptor Center for a variety of ailments, including anemia. Christa Gail Pike Survives Two Lethal Injection Attempts on Tennessee Death Row.

President Donald Trump is holding a campaign rally in the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. Thursday's visit puts Trump in the company of just a handful of U.S. presidents who have visited Native American tribes while in office. Tribal delegations have been meeting with presidents in Washington since the Early Republic. But presidential visits to tribal lands have been few and far between. The purpose and tone of those visits have changed dramatically as the relationship between the U.S. and tribal nations evolved. Early visits promoted the assimilation of Natives into white society, while more recent visits promoted the tribes' inherent right to govern themselves.

Jail records showed that Ross was being held Thursday morning on $5,000 bail. An arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 22.

Sept. 11 Ranks Among the Most Historic Events in Many Americans’ Lifetimes

Lindsay Clancy’s attorney is asking a Massachusetts judge to acquit her of charges that she killed her three young children. Her trial ended in a mistrial. Defense attorney Kevin Reddington argues prosecutors failed to prove Clancy was criminally responsible and that the case should not be tried twice. Eleven of 12 jurors were prepared to find Clancy not guilty by reason of insanity. Clancy’s defense said she was suffering from postpartum psychosis when she killed her children in 2023. Prosecutors said she knew what she was doing. If the judge grants the motion, Clancy would not face another trial.

King Charles III clarifies the status of Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, after their return to the UK. The official communication said that Prince Harry and Meghan’s return to the United Kingdom does not change their royal status. They remain non-working members of the Royal Family and are to be treated as private citizens.

What the letter said

  • The letter was issued on the King’s behalf by the Lord Chamberlain, Lord Richard Benyon, following requests for guidance after the Sussexes’ move back to the UK. It was sent to Harry’s team and to government, military, and royal representatives.

  • Harry and Meghan stepped down from representative duties for the sovereign in January 2020 and are “no longer working Members of The Royal Family.” That position remains unchanged.

  • They will not carry out official engagements or represent the King or the Royal Family. Any activities they undertake are in a personal, private capacity.

  • Their “His Royal Highness” and “Her Royal Highness” styles remain in abeyance and are not used.

  • Their charity work is described as personal work conducted privately, rather than on behalf of the Royal Family.

  • The letter characterizes their position as akin to “private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.”

  • Questions concerning their operational security are for the relevant police agencies, not the Royal Household. Administrative correspondence about them should go directly to their separate office.

  • The stated purpose of the communication was to avoid “doubt or confusion” about their status.
