King Charles III clarifies the status of Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, after their return to the UK. The official communication said that Prince Harry and Meghan’s return to the United Kingdom does not change their royal status. They remain non-working members of the Royal Family and are to be treated as private citizens.
The letter was issued on the King’s behalf by the Lord Chamberlain, Lord Richard Benyon, following requests for guidance after the Sussexes’ move back to the UK. It was sent to Harry’s team and to government, military, and royal representatives.
Harry and Meghan stepped down from representative duties for the sovereign in January 2020 and are “no longer working Members of The Royal Family.” That position remains unchanged.
They will not carry out official engagements or represent the King or the Royal Family. Any activities they undertake are in a personal, private capacity.
Their “His Royal Highness” and “Her Royal Highness” styles remain in abeyance and are not used.
Their charity work is described as personal work conducted privately, rather than on behalf of the Royal Family.
The letter characterizes their position as akin to “private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.”
Questions concerning their operational security are for the relevant police agencies, not the Royal Household. Administrative correspondence about them should go directly to their separate office.
The stated purpose of the communication was to avoid “doubt or confusion” about their status.
