Stiffer penalties, fines announced for teams that make expletive chats aimed at BYU during sporting events

Chants and trash talk are all too common in sports games. But when the attacks turn personal — whether about someone’s race, ethnicity, or religion, it crosses a line. BYU’s sports teams have long been the targets of expletives yelled at them and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. But it’s really amplified as the Cougars joined the Big 12 Conference. Now, following an incident at UCF last weekend, the Big 12 is cracking down in a big way. KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper joins the conversation.

Deceived: KSL launches new podcast digging into the Daybell story

Just a few years ago, Tyler Ryan and JJ Vallow disappeared. They were later found murdered, and their mother and her husband were convicted. But during the investigation, it came out that these murders weren’t the beginning — the story had begun years before with now-deceased spouses of both Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell. This is the focus of a new podcast released by KSL today called Deceived: The Daybell Story. For insights into this podcast and what it covers, Greg and Holly speak with Nate Easton, news director of East Idaho News and the host of the new podcast.

Election check-in: Drama in the Alaska senate race, Dems see new battleground states

The senate race in the country’s coldest state is heating up in some really interesting ways. This morning, the governor of Alaska order an investigation into claims of Democratic involvement in getting another Dan Sullivan on the ballot to run against the incumbent, Senator Dan Sullivan. A New York Times investigation now claims that Democratic challenger Mary Peltola’s team was involved in the scheme. Also, Democrats nationwide are now looking at new potential battleground states in the race for Senate, including Florida, South Carolina, and Mississippi.

Your Voice, Your Vote: Explaining Amendment A

In this segment, the Inside Sources hosts break down the less controversial of the two amendments on Utah’s ballots this election: Amendment A. This amendment changes the publication requirements for proposed constitutional amendments — removing a 60-day newspaper notice that is currently required per the state constitution. Greg and Holly explain the proposal and share insights on both sides of the issue.

Utah homeowners losing their homeowners insurance at alarming rates

Utah homeowners are struggling to keep their homeowners insurance policies, often through no fault of their own. New data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners says Utahns are losing their insurance coverage at a higher rate than homeowners in any other state. The KSL Investigates team dug into the numbers and spoke with the state insurance commissioner to find out why.

Utah’s fight against gambling

The fight between Utah and Kalshi has now turned criminal. Utah Attorney General Derek Brown filed criminal charges against the prediction market platform and some of its executives. It comes just days after the U.S. government and the FTC sued Utah to stop the state’s ban on Kalshi. At the same time, we’re reading that AG Brown’s political campaign took donations from the gambling industry, including some of Kalshi’s competitors. Does that complicate the existing suits?

Also, there’s a new warning from the CEO of Draft Kings about the dangers of online gambling — including sports betting — for our teenagers. Gambling might be illegal in the state of Utah, but that doesn’t mean we’re immune from the negative effects of gambling. For more on a conversation on teenage gambling addiction and how to avoid it, Greg and Holly turn to Gregory Noel, LMFT; he’s the co-founder and clinical director of In Solidarity Counseling.

Several European countries, Japan encourage citizens to stock up on emergency supplies

You know what they say: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Several countries in Europe -- and Japan too -- are warning their citizens to be prepared for some pretty serious disasters. Among the things citizens are being asked to stock up on is food. We Utahns know this principle very well -- if you know, you know.

Summit County investigators announce closure of murder case from 1974, attributing it to Ted Bundy

After waiting more than 50 years for answers, the family of a woman found killed in Summit County in 1974 finally has some answers. Investigators have announced the closure of the murder case for Melissa Ann Smith, saying notorious killer Ted Bundy was to blame for her disappearance and death. Bundy has often been linked to various cases around the country, but evidence suggests he didn't do everything he's credited for. Dave Cawley, KSL Podcasts executive producer and host of the COLD Podcast, joins Inside Sources with details on what makes this situation different.

Last Stop: Long-term cruise journey ends a whole year early

A luxury three-year trip around the world has suddenly ended, leaving hundreds of senior passengers stranded in the Asian country of Cambodia. These people paid quite a pretty penny to live on this ship. Now, things have ended a year early, and many don't have a home to go back to; many sold their homes and planned to live on the cruise for years and years, something that was originally promised to them by the cruise company. But the company says oil prices just got too expensive to continue on.

How do voters feel about morals and corruption in this election?

Many independent voters around the country have struggled with this question in the past, and they're struggling this election cycle too: "Do I vote for somebody who I think will vote and do things I agree with, but appears to be a terrible human being?" A new analysis from the Deseret News got us thinking about this today -- the role morality plays in our elections and overall politics. For more on this, the hosts turn to Deseret News politics reporter Brigham Tomco.

Former state lawmaker makes first appearance in court on charges of fraud and forgery

Former state representative Trevor Lee made his first appearance in court today as he fights charges of communications fraud, mortgage fraud, and forgery. Charges were filed several weeks ago against Lee, and he resigned from the state legislature immediately afterwards. Prosecutors say much of his alleged fraud came from a home purchase Lee made. The investigations began after prosecutors were asked to look into allegations of public corruption.

Israeli PM election too close to call; Aftereffects of Brazilian, Serbian elections

It's still too close to call -- still no declared winner in the Israeli prime minister race. Neither Benjamin Netanyahu nor his challenger in the opposition party has received enough votes to be named the clear winner. The votes are still being tallied right now, but it looks like neither candidate will have enough support to form their own government. For details on how the Israeli election is turning out and what the future holds depending on who wins, Greg and Holly turn to Middle East expert Dr. Austin Knuppe, Director of the Heravi Peace Institute at Utah State University. The Inside Sources hosts also discuss the fallout of the losing Brazilian presidential candidate fleeing to the U.S. and the aftereffects of a major election in the European country of Serbia.

Federal government sues Utah over state's ban on Kalshi

The federal government is stepping in to try to stop Utah from banning Kalshi. The development comes just after Utah Attorney General Derek Brown sued the prediction market, saying their business is gambling and cannot operate in the state. Remember, our state constitution explicitly bans all forms of gambling. But the feds say Kalshi isn't gambling, so what's up with this? KSL Legal Analyst Greg Skordas breaks down the arguments and says this case could very well end up before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Hackers target the Federal Elections Commission just days before midterm elections

Hackers have targeted the Federal Elections Commission's system, disrupting campaign finance disclosures with less than a week to go until the election. As of this morning, the FEC's electronic filing system is still out of service. Inside Sources host Holly Richardson points out that this is a great reason why our elections shouldn't be centralized; it's much harder to hack more than 3,200 individual county systems from all over the country.

Lake Powell sees increased levels following heavy rain in Southern Utah.

Southern Utah has been pummeled by heavy rain over the last several days -- Southwestern Utah got hit hard last week, followed by Southeastern Utah over the weekend. The rain has resulted in some pretty bad flooding, but it's also helped the struggling Lake Powell. In just a few days, the reservoir has seen several additional feet added to its storage. KSL Meteorologist Matt Johnson joins to explain just how much water the reservoir has received.

Ribbon-cutting held for final phase completion of new SLC Airport

Travelers rejoice -- the new Salt Lake City International Airport is finally finished. This morning, airport and city leaders held a ribbon-cutting for the final gates to open with the new project. That doesn't mean we won't see future expansions. But for now, the construction crews are finally getting a break... 12 years after the project began. Greg and Holly reminisce about how much has changed at the airport and the memories they've made there.
