Lamar Reviews - "The Diplomat" (Airdate 5/5/2023)

Back when you were running out to the mailbox, to get the movies Netflix had sent you, who would have thought, years down the road they would be a major production company, putting out great movies and series, starring big name talent, and streaming it into you home? And in doing so, they were able to bring down the great satan, the destroyer of dreams, AKA Blockbuster Video, to their very knees! Having the bitter taste of bankruptcy on their lips, and the aftertaste of despair. Making the world a safer and better place, in which to bring up your children.

Just a few weeks ago I told you about the Night Agent, which was fabulous! Now I’m telling you about the Diplomat, which is just as good, if not better in its own way. If Netflix gets any better, Abner, Eli, and all the other Amish are going to crank up the generators, and get cable!

This series stars Keri Russell as Ambassador Kate Wyler. She is married to Hal Wyler, played by Rufus Sewell, who used to be an ambassador.

When Hal had been an Ambassador, Kate was his right hand, doing all the research and helping him be a very successful Ambassador, who although did great things, bringing enemies together, and solving conflicts, he was very out of the box. So out of the box, he is no longer an Ambassador. Kate is now doing very important work for women in Islamic countries until the President, played by Michael McKean, gives her no choice but become the Ambassador to London. Now Hal is backing her up. And even though they are getting a divorce, the chemistry between them is still off the chain great.

A British aircraft carrier has been attacked, killing dozens of British soldiers, and Prime Minister Trowbridge is on the verge of starting a war! Kate has to stop that from happening with help, or in spite of, help from Hal. The supporting cast is fantastic, and the intrigue is real. But all of that is secondary to the sharp dialog that can only be compared to Aaron Sorkin’s West Wing, which makes sense because this show was created by Debora Cahn, who worked on The West wing. Each episode is better than the last.

8 Episodes, each 50 minutes, Rated TV-MA for language and sexual situations.

The conversations, especially the ones between Kate and Hal, will keep you watching. Kate feels like she has left the very serious work she was doing for Islamic women to be a frivolous representative of America. She hates dressing up for photo shoots and speaking to the press. Hal on the other hand, thrives on all of it. The question is, what Hal calls help, Kate calls interference, and is he doing it to help her or himself.

The backdrop of the English countryside is pleasing to the eye, and the fast paced, often hilarious, dialog, along with the political tightrope, keeps your mind working.

Carla and I watched all eight episodes back to back in one day. Yes, it truly is a glamourous life we live.
