Lamar Reviews - "Spiderhead" (Airdate 6/24/2022)
It is very easy to get sucked into watching this movie. Chris Hemsworth frankly guarantees that people are at least going to click on it. It is directed by Joseph Kosinski, who just did Top Gun: Maverick, and Miles Teller, who was in Top Gun Maverick, is also in this movie. Plus, it is on Netflix so you are saving at least $50 bucks if only 2 people watch it. So why in the world would you not sit down a check it out? Because it sucks! I watched the trailer, and some clips, and I thought, “This looks like it is going to suck.”. But I referred back to the original points and thought, “I’m sure once I get into it I’ll enjoy it. It can’t be that bad.” Nope, I was wrong, it is that bad.
The story is set in a penitentiary set on an island in the middle of nowhere. You can only get there by plane or boat. It looks like a supervillain lair. All are convicted felons that volunteered to come here to be experimented on. The men conducting the experiments are Steve, played by Chris Hemsworth, and his assistant Verlaine, played by Mark Paguio.
The prisoners live in really nice apartments, given good food, have recreation areas, and are served snacks every evening. They are allowed to come and go as they please, and interact with each other. For them it beats regular prison for sure. They give the prisoners various types of experimental drugs that completely and immediately change their behavior. The names of the drugs are very straight forward, and ridiculous. Luvactin makes you sexually attractive to whoever is in the room with you. Laffodil sends you into fits of laughter. Phobica brings on paranoia, and fear. If you want someone to talk you give them Verbaluce, and they can’t shut up. And the real trouble maker is Darkenfloxx fills you with fear and self-loathing where you can’t wait to die. I will admit I would like to see the drug company commercials for these.
Jeff, played by Miles Teller is Steve’s go to patient, and he goes along willingly, until he finds out that Steve is not what he seems. He has an agenda that has nothing to do with helping people. Jeff strikes up a relationship with Rachel, played by Jurnee Smollett. It is real and not drug induced. When Jeff realizes what is happening he wants out.
The movie is what seems like an extremely long hour and 46 minutes, Rated R for violent content, language and sexual content.
I know Chris Hemsworth is trying to make sure he’s not typecast as just a superhero, and playing the villain is a good way accomplish that. He did a good job but the movie itself sucked. This is the first of a four movie deal he has made with Netflix and I assume he has to do what they want him to do. This is not good start, but on the other hand, I don’t think it can get any worse.
On the bright side, the soundtrack is amazing.
My Score 3 Bus, only because of Chris Hemsworth
