Episode Description

Lamar Reviews - "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" (Airdate 5/12/2023)

The first two were big, and so is this one, but it is very different from the others, and longer, at 2 ½ hours. It has a darker, and somewhat sadder tone. Guardians 2 brought us up to speed on the origins of Star Lord/Peter Quill, played by Chris Pratt. Volume 3 explains just how Rocket, voiced by Bradley Cooper, came to be who he is. We have always known that Rocket had suffered at the hands of someone doing experiments on all types of species. We just did not know the gory details. Rocket was the victim of The High Evolutionary, played by Chukwudi Iwuji, a man who considers himself a god that is trying to create the perfect species to inhabit a planet. Sorta like that Hitler guy years ago, the one that singlehandedly ruined the box mustache forever.

The movie opens with a tremendous Battle that breaks out when Adam Warlock, a new guy with super powers, played by Will Poulter, is sent to kidnap Rocket.

Rocket is severely injured. The only way to save him is to find the code to a “kill switch” that was installed by The High Evolutionary during one of the bizarre surgeries. During the search for the code Quill is reunited with Gamora, played by Zoe Saladana, who does not remember their relationship since dying and coming back after the Infinity War. Now, if you don’t know what the hell I’m talking about, don’t worry. You were never going to see this movie anyway!

The movie is an emotional rollercoaster, but the humor is still there. The chemistry between Mantis, played by Pom Klementieff and Drax is strong and very funny. Dave Bautista continues to be excellent as Drax, and gets more laughs than anyone. In everything he does, he continues to surprise us, as he gets better and better.

The movie is 150 minutes, Rated PG-13 for language and violence.

I do want to say, before you bring young children, who of course can’t wait to see this movie, the violence against Rocket and all the animals that are being experimented on is very visual, and very disturbing. I just want you to know what you are going into.

This might be one of the most colorful Marvel Movies I’ve seen, along with tons of different textures. This film sets the record for the most makeup appliances used in a single film. More than 23,000 prosthetics were used on more than 1,000 actors. They only used CGI if they absolutely had to.  Among the list of the regular characters, they have added Cosmo, the space dog, voiced by Maria Bakalova, and it is a great addition.

I loved the movie, but I have to say it is my least favorite of the 3. Part of that is probably my expectations were too high, and this had more darkness and sadness than the others. But it is still a fantastic movie, and a lot of fun.

To really enjoy it, you have to have seen the other two.

My Score: 5 Buds
