Careful how you drive… your car may be reporting you

Be careful about what you say or do when you're driving -- your car's probably selling your data and information to big tech companies. Honestly though -- is anyone really surprised? According to reporting from Consumer Reports, high-tech cars are selling personal information, including your car's VIN, to third-party advertisers. Greg and Holly talk about whether or not we should ever expect privacy anymore, even when in our own private spaces.

Ensign College launches new vocational technical center

Across the country -- and here in Utah, especially -- skilled trades education programs are coming back into the forefront. Now there's nothing inherently wrong with traditional higher education, but it's exciting to see additional opportunities for people to learn and contribute to our workforce. To help meet the needs of students, Ensign College has opened a new vocational center that looks to bridge the gap between these two kinds of education programs. For more on this new center and how it works, Doug McDougal, Dean of Applied Sciences and Technical and Vocational Education and Joseph Kerry, Assistant Dean of Applied Sciences and Technical and Vocational Education at Ensign College join the program.

Your Voice, Your Vote: Midterm 'vibe' check

Heading into the midterms, how are Utah voters feeling? Hopeful, hopeless, anxious? According to new polling from the Deseret News and Hinckley Institute of Politics, Utah voters are feeling both hopeful and anxious; it's especially true for Utah Democrats. Republicans feel more hopeful for the election -- both nationally and here at home -- but the levels of anxiety are also quite high. Your Voice, Your Vote -- Greg and Holly break down the newest data.

Poor jobs numbers, higher mortgage rates lead to economic concerns ahead of the midterms

As we head into the midterms, the economy is top-of-mind for many voters. So, this morning's poor jobs report isn't exactly welcome news. The unemployment rate still remains near historic lows, so that's good. But it's on the rise -- that's not so good. Jobs in September increased nationwide by only 29,000 and the unemployment rate rose to 4.2%. All of this is happening at the same time that mortgage rates keep ticking up and more Americans are turning to "buy now, pay later" services.

Refunds are coming for some Amazon Prime members, and so are scammers

Millions of people are getting refunds from Amazon Prime starting today thanks to a massive settlement. A year ago, Amazon agreed to pay billions of dollars after allegations that they had signed people up for their Prime service without their permission, then made it too hard to cancel. But as with all good news, there are warnings. We hear from KSL Investigator Matt Gephardt with his warnings.

Reports: Rape allegations from Cornell University case not passed along to district attorney in 2024

The information that keeps coming out on the rape investigation and case involving Cornell University students and administrators keeps getting worse. Several news outlets have obtained documents from the original investigation that show that the alleged victim did tell police about the rape in 2024 and said it was absolutely rape at the time. But that information was never passed along to the district attorney, so he declined to pursue charges.

Ask the Attorney: How did Tennessee botch a death penalty execution?

The execution of a woman in Tennessee went very wrong last night after she survived what was supposed to be two lethal doses of drugs. This morning, Governor Bill Lee put a hold on all executions through the end of the year while they figure out what happened. So what went wrong in the process? And what's supposed to happen now? KSL Legal Analyst Greg Skordas gives his take, and we hear from both a witness to the event and the governor of Tennessee.

Wildlife officials encourage Utahns to report urban bear sightings

Have you seen bears in your neighborhood when they're not usually there? Right now, the Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) is pleading with people to call them when they see bears... even though several social media posts are discouraging those reports. A lot of people say not reporting the sightings will save the bears from euthanasia. But is that accurate? For more,  Holly and Greg turn to Chad Wilson, game mammals coordinator with the Utah DWR.

On the Hill: Legislative audit says Utah's judiciary needs more oversight and accountability

The last couple of years have been filled with a lot of tension between Utah's legislature and the judiciary -- it's no secret that they've come to heads several times. Now, a new legislative audit says there should be more oversight of Utah's courts… by the legislature itself. The audit reiterated that judicial independence is important, but it says that there's a lack of public confidence in the courts, and legislative oversight and more accountability will help. Holly and Greg share some skepticism of the audit recommendations; they explain this in these segments.

The morals and ethics of AI in life and in faith

AI this and AI that -- it's become one of the most common stories we talk about. A new agreement between AI leaders and the White House aims to add some safeguards to tech developments; they're all calling it "morally binding." In these segments, Greg and Holly talk more about the morals and ethics of AI. First, they speak with University of Utah School of Computing Professor Jeff Phillips about the ethics of artificial intelligence and whether they can coexist. Then, they speak with KSL Brightside's Alex Kirry about his team's upcoming General Conference special discussing the role of AI in faith and religion.

Data center in Box Elder County continues to move ahead… but quietly

It feels like it's been a while since we talked about the data center project in Box Elder County. Remember, this is the one that really sparked intense pushback on data centers around the state. The project's still moving ahead, even despite being at the center of three pending lawsuits. At the same time, there are proposals to build even more data centers -- plus nuclear reactors -- on Utah's public lands.

The status of the country's skilled trades workforce

Over the last few years, state leaders have put a renewed emphasis on the importance of trade skills -- of making sure our young people are getting opportunities to learn in ways besides traditional higher education. It comes at a good time as nearly 1/4 of current tradespeople are expected to retire soon. In this segment, we want to talk about a report that just came out on the State of America's Skilled Trades Workforce. Maria Flynn, President and CEO of Jobs for the Future, joins Inside Sources to explain the need for more tradespeople.

Sen. Mike Lee pushes for impeachment of federal judge who ruled against Pres. Trump

If a judge doesn't rule in your favor, you generally appeal to the next higher court -- you don't usually try to get the judge removed from the bench. But that's exactly what Senator Mike Lee is proposing; he wants to impeach a federal judge who ruled against President Trump. The ruling in question paused the President's push to restrict mail-in voting. Greg and Holly have no shortage of thoughts on the move.

Pres. Trump blocks funding for Utah's national parks

Major projects at Utah's national parks are now on hold after the federal government blocked $1.7 million in funding. The projects were designed to support research and protect resources across the state. This money wouldn't have only gone to Utah's "Mighty 5 Parks"; it would also have gone to recreation areas in the state managed by the federal government.

Utah's changing population could affect college enrollment

Utah's population is changing and that's going to mean a bit of an enrollment crunch for Utah's colleges and universities in the coming years. New data from the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute re-emphasizes a warning from the state's Speaker of the House: we need to be looking at the future and prepare now. With more on this new data and how colleges can prepare, Greg and Holly are joined by Deseret News reporter Jason Swensen.
