Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: ‘The Best Christmas Pageant Ever’ is a delightful holiday family film

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of November 8,  2024. Starting off, "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" is a delightful adaptation of a book and an excellent family film to kick off the holiday season. Andy actually sat down with Producers Chet Thomas and Darin McDaniel of the show in a Movie Show Digital Extra, which you can find at this link.  Also in theaters is the action suspense movie called "Elevation," which is basically “A Quiet Place” only if the creatures can't go above 8000 ft instead of not being able to see. And, a Luc Besson co-written action movie called "Weekend in Taipei" starring Luke Evans, Sung Kang, and a Taiwanese action star named Gwei Lun-Me, has some fun action pieces.

As for streaming, if you like Pentatonix but don't want to hear them sing very much, you could watch "Meet Me Next Christmas" on Netflix, where Christina Milian is hoping to get some tickets to meet a potential beau at the concert on Christmas Eve, but perhaps she'll realize that everything she was looking for may have been right in front of her the whole time!

If you want a hit of nostalgia, Robert Zemeckis, Tom Hanks, and Robin Wright are back in theaters with  the generational film "Here." Also in theaters is a unique faith-based fighting film called “The Carpenter,” which mixes a bunch of things that you wouldn't usually put together but actually worked! The pick-of-the-week goes to the DisneyPlus Streaming documentary “Music by John Williams,” which offers two hours of goosebump-inducing music as you bask in the man's supreme musical talent . Also on streaming, Netflix’s season two of the drama “The Diplomat” brings back Keri Russell as the U.S. Ambassador to London trying to work through delicate geo-political situations while investigating a bombing that hit her husband.

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ isn’t a waltz but reasonably entertaining

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of October 25, 2024. The weekend's big movie is “Venom: The Last Dance.” For which Andy had to set aside his objections to a Spider-Man Universe film without Spider-Man to admit it was reasonably entertaining. What was more than entertaining is “Conclave,” featuring Ralph Fiennes and the rest of the Cardinals choosing a new Pope; this is one of the best movies of the year, which is no surprise as it is based off of a best-selling fiction novel. Also in theaters is the quirky horror romantic comedy "Your Monster." And on streaming, Season 3 of the Netflix “The Lincoln Lawyer” is another fine entry into one of the best legal dramas on TV.

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: Bring the tissues for ‘We Live In Time’

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of October 18, 2024.  Bring the tissues for "We Live in Time” and enjoy the rich chemistry between Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh. Michael Keaton stars in another film this year, this time playing a father trying to repair a strained relationship with his daughter in  “Goodrich.” The film highlights the versatility of Keaton and the strong performance of Mila Kunis, who plays his daughter.  Amazon Prime’s “Brothers” reminds Andy of comedies before streaming, with Peter Dinklage and Josh Brolin playing criminal twins and enjoyable scene-stealing performances by Glenn Close and Brendan Fraser. And Anna Kendrick's directorial debut in Netflix’s “Woman of the Hour” has some tense scenes and takes great care not to glorify the actual serial killer story it is based on.

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: ‘Saturday Night’ will please SNL fans

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of October 12, 2024. Three separate and unique movies are highlighted this week, led by ”Saturday Night," a movie about the lead-up to the first episode of Saturday Night Live nearly 50 years ago, which fans of SNL will enjoy. Next is a non-Church-produced movie, "Six Days In August," which is about the succession of Brigham Young as leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints after the death of Joseph Smith. Andy even has a deep dive  “Movie Show Extra” episode with the writer/director of this movie, as well as multiple actors from the film. Finally, one of the most unique documentaries he has ever seen is "Piece By Piece," the story of musician Pharrell Williams...told completely in LEGO animation!  It's inventive, creative, imaginative, and one of Andy's Top 5  animated movies of the year.

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: ‘Joker: Folie a Deux’ is not the sequel for Andy Farnsworth

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of October 10, 2024. While the highly anticipated sequel "Joker: Folie a Deux" finally arrived in theaters, it was just not something Andy enjoyed, especially “With nary a Batman to be found." But the family film "Monster Summer" was enjoyable, even with some dark, scary-adjacent themes. Andy’s favorite was “White Bird," an emotionally engaging story about the power of kindness and actively choosing it. And we can’t forget streaming options. On Netflix, there's also a bit of Halloween-related "fun" that's new...a 30-minute cartoon short called "The Bad Guys: Haunted Heist" that your kids will like better than you will.

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: ‘The Wild Robot’ may be the best-animated movie of the year

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of September 27, 2024. “The Wild Robot” may be the best-animated movie of the year and is this week's Big Movie of the Week; it can make you laugh, cry, think, and feel for nearly two hours, and it's worth your family's time! For streaming, George Clooney and Brad Pitt charm their way through a messy situation in the Apple TV+ movie, "Wolfs." On Netflix,  "Nobody Wants This” stars Kristen Bell as a "shiksa" who falls for a younger Rabbi played by Adam Brody is easily the funniest and most well-written comedy series in a while. Also on Netflix,  a fascinating documentary series called "Mr. McMahon" looks at the life of the former WWE owner & CEO Vince McMahon. It is a must-watch for pro wrestling fans!

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: ‘Transformers One’ wins over Transformers fan Andy Farnsworth

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of Sep. 20, 2024. Andy is thrilled that "Transformers One" turned out so well, as it respects the source material for long-time fans, but it is also funny, new, and engaging for younger audiences.

The latest Marvel DisneyPlus streaming series, "Agatha All Along," lets the talented Kathryn Hahn showcase her magical gifts….just don't expect many connections to the MCU at large. Another superhero-adjacent series, this time in the DC Comics realm, is "The Penguin" on Max. Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobb seeks an opportunity to seize power in the post “The Batman" Gotham City. And long-time fans of the character Frasier Crane finally get another season of the rebooted "Frasier" on ParamountPlus, so expect more hijinks and fun cameos.

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: ‘Faith of Angels’ is a filmed-in-Utah family-watch of the weekend

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of September 13, 2024. "Faith of Angels” is an inspiring and uplifting story about the search for a 10-year-old boy lost in a Utah mine.  This movie, filmed in Utah, is an excellent choice for a family to watch. On the other end of the emotional spectrum, we've got "Speak No Evil" with a terrifying (and shockingly buff) James McAvoy making sure his houseguests don't leave without saying goodbye (or just DON'T LEAVE!) The violence is off-the-charts in "The Killer's Game," a Dave Bautista-led action comedy where a hitman hires people to kill him before he dies of a terminal illness, then changes his mind and fights them all off. And over streaming on Netflix, Joey King headlines "Uglies" as a girl in a dystopian future who can only get the surgery that will make her pretty if she finds a friend who's run away to join a rebellion.

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is a playfully macabre sequel about death

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is a 36-year in-the-making sequel to the cult classic Tim Burton fueled film, 1988’s “Beetlejuice.” A show about death and claymation that’s spurned a generation's love of the playfully macabre, black and white stripes, and a creepy demon bio-exorcist. Today on Fan Effect, hosts Andy Farnsworth and KellieAnn Halvorsen, along with guest Natalie Mollinet of Nat’s Nerd Knowledge, dive into the underworld world of Beetlejuice from the original, the Broadway version, the current sequel, and everything in between.

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: Michael Keaton is back at his goofy best in ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of September 6, 2024. Michael Keaton is back as the goofy ghost Beetlejuice in the sequel decades in the making with "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice."  Also back are Winona Ryder and Catherine O'Hara, and Jenna Ortega and Justin Theroux are joining them this time in this fun, but not too deep, frolic.

The best thing Andy watched this week was Netflix's "His Three Daughters", a movie where Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne and Elizabeth Olsen argue and grieve as they care for their terminally ill father. Also on Netflix and surprisingly goo is the action movie  "Rebel Ridge". And in a triple header for Netflix, "The Perfect Couple" combines a great cast with some rich people drama and a whodunit that's stupid... ly addicting.

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: ‘Reagan’ is a biopic for Ronald Reagan fans

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of August 30, 2024.  "Reagan" is Hollywood’s latest biopic, especially made for fand of the 40th president of the United states. “You Gotta Believe" is also based on a real-life story of a baseball team from Texas that made it to the Little League World Series over 20 years ago. For thriller fans, Blumhouse’s "AfrAId" might make you worry about any artificial intelligence assistant that serves your family.

For streaming fodder, Peacock has a fascinating documentary called "Gary," about late actor Gary Coleman, who famously played Arnold on "Diff'rent Strokes." And "Only Murders in the Building" fourth season premiered on Hulu this week; it is about murder-solving podcasters Steve Martin, Selena Gomez & Martin Short in a hilarious fashion

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: ‘Blink Twice’ is a slow burn turned mystery thriller

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of August 23, 2024.  The Zoë Kravitz directed ‘Blink Twice’ is  a slow-burn for most of the film, but then it picks up and turns into a mystery thriller. While that might be an ok watch, Andy warns you don't need to waste your time on "The Crow", a bloody and violent remake of the 1994 cult hit. On the other hand, John Woo's remake of his own movie "The Killer" on Peacock is very watchable, if you like artistic action films. Also streaming, "Chimp Crazy" is a HBO Original  which  looks at people who breed chimps to be human pets, and comes from the producer/director who made "Tiger King."

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of August 16, 2024. A new chapter in the “Alien” movie franchise BURSTS into theaters as the Big Movie of the week with “Alien: Romulus.” Despite the horror/suspense genre turn, it’s Andy actually likes it! Producer KellieAnn really enjoyed it, as they both reviewed the film in our podcast.

Also out this week is one of the best movies Andy’s seen this year, called "Sing Sing." It is based on a true story and stars Coleman Domingo and Clarence Maclin as incarcerated men participating in a theater group at the famous Sing Sing Maximum Security Prison in New York. For family night, "My Penguin Friend" is another based on true events. It is about a Brazilian fisherman and his wife who take care of an oil-covered penguin and how it helps them heal from tragedy. And streaming on Netflix is “The Union,” starring Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry, a by-the-numbers action comedy that gets a boost from its charismatic leads.

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: ‘Twisters’ is a fun ride of a standalone sequel

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of July 19, 2024. The year of Glen Powell continues as he headlines, along with Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos, the "standalone sequel" “Twisters,” on the big screen. Over on streaming, Dave Bautista returns to lead an action-comedy streaming sequel movie called "My Spy: The Eternal City," which is silly but occasionally hilarious on Amazon Prime.

Andy’s pick of the week is the Netflix documentary "Skywalkers: A Love Story," which is NOT about Star Wars, but rather some thrill-seekers who illegally climb the outside of skyscrapers and take photos/videos at the top.  It's almost impossible to believe! And we have to mention the sixth and final season of the “Cobra Kai” TV series, also on Netflix, begins as the dojos prepare for the Sekai Taikai tournament and the final showdown with their arch-nemesis.

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: Channing Tatum and Scarlett Johansson take off in ‘Fly Me To The Moon’

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of July 12, 2024. This weekend Channing Tatum and Scarlett Johansson take off in "Fly Me To The Moon," which mixes historical fact and historical fiction for a fun result. It is a limited release, but it is worth your time to check out "Robot Dreams," which is one of the best-animated features from 2023 that is finally playing locally. On streaming, the series "Me" on Apple TV+ is like a combination of "Heroes" and "X-Men" but for the younger kid set.  And if you need an NFL fix to tide you over a couple of months until the new season starts, check out "Receiver" on Netflix. Also, don't forget that the original 1994 animated “The Lion King" is getting a one-week, 30th anniversary re-release in theaters this week!

Leap into gaming fun at ‘Quest Fest’ this July, with Ryan Sagers and JJ Safley

Did you know that Salt Lake City has been named the #1 place for board games? That includes tabletop games, board and card games, role-play gaming, and more! On this episode of Fan Effect, returning guests explore all things gaming, including a live event where you can literally leap into the fun. “Quest Fest” is a free event that will take place at the Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, Utah,  on Friday, July 19, and Saturday, July 20, 2024. Set up like a giant board game, attendees can visit dragons, explore with pirates, visit magical vendors, and take in some unique art and entertainment.

Joining to talk about this event and why gaming is many’s #FavoriteFandom is “Quest Fest’s” creator and game master Ryan Sagers, who previously joined the show for his JanuArty event. As well as JJ Safley, Cipher Queen and dice vendor and “Games and Things,” who has previously joined Fan Effect on our “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” deep dive. Together with producer KellieAnn, they explore the fun of gaming to, unofficially, celebrate the 50th anniversary of ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ gaming

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: Celebrate the Fourth of July Weekend with the fourth ‘Despicable Me’

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of July 5, 2024. The Fourth of July week means lots of new movies to choose from!  Our big movie is "Despicable Me 4" which, while fun, also seems to be at a story end for our main characters. A great, uplifting movie is also in theaters:  "Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot," in which an entire town works together to adopt all 77 of the foster kids in the system. Fans of Eddie Murphy will want to check out "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F." on Netflix, which reunites all living cast members for another go-around. Also on Netflix, you can't go wrong with the animated movie "The Imaginary," which has Japanese-style hand-drawn animation and tells a story similar to the film "IF" but done better (in my opinion). Finally, it's silly but fun:  "Space Cadet," on Prime Video, sees a free-spirited Florida woman (Emma Roberts) get a chance to live her lifelong dream of training to be an astronaut. It's like the 80s movie " Space Camp," but for Gen Z and Alpha.

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: ‘The Bikeriders’ hits the road and the big screen

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of June 21, 2024. The 1960s and 70s motorcycle culture is celebrated in“The Bikeriders,” which hits the road and theater screens this week. Andy says it's worth it for Jodie Comer's amazing Midwest accent alone! As unreal as it sounds, "Thelma" is an action movie starring 93-year-old June Squibb as a grandmother who gets phone scammed out of $10K, so she goes to get it back. And it's a fan-fave at Sundance this year! Another Sundance 2024 film, and Andy’s favorite this week, is “Ghostlight,” where a family struggling to deal with personal trauma finds unexpected connections when they get pulled into a community theater production of "Romeo & Juliet." And if you are a Celine Dion fan, you'll probably want to check out "I AM: Celine Dion" in theaters before it hits streaming on Amazon Prime Video next week.
