Susan Smith, also known as "the most hated mother in America", captured the nation's attention in October 1994 when begged for the safe return of her children - 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alexander. She claimed she was carjacked by a black man who drove away with her sons still inside the car. For nine days, she made tearful pleas on national TV for their safe return - but it was all a lie - and the truth shocked the world.
