The film is a meditation on freedom, individualism, and the human spirit, famously capturing Luke’s defiance with the iconic line, “What we’ve got here is failure to communicate.” Cool Hand Luke earned Newman an Academy Award nomination and won George Kennedy an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, cementing the film’s status as a classic of American cinema.
