Country music icon Loretta Lynn died at age 90 on October 4, 2022. She was the first woman to win Entertainer of the Year awards from both the CMA & ACM, won three Grammy Awards, and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in 2013. She had been a member of the Grand Ole Opry since 1962. She recorded 54 studio albums over her 60+ year career.
The day after her passing, several stars of country music joined Coffee, Country & Cody to tell stories of how Loretta's extraordinary life and career impacted each of them.
You'll hear memories in this episode from Riders In The Sky's Too Slim, Rhonda Vincent, Craig Morgan, Kathy Mattea, Charlie McCoy, Caylee Hammack, David Bellamy, Rudy Gatlin, Garth Brooks & Trisha Yearwood, John Berry, Ricky Skaggs, and Lainey Wilson.
Loretta Lynn was a friend and a mentor to all of us here at WSM and the Grand Ole Opry, along with the millions of fans around the world who enjoyed her music and saw her as an inspiration. She will be greatly missed.
Coffee, Country & Cody is the long-running morning show on Nashville's WSM Radio, broadcasting over the air on 650 AM and worldwide on the WSM App and at WSMRadio.com. Bill Cody, who has hosted the show for more than 30 years, leads the team along with his co-host, Amazon Music's Kelly Sutton, a fixture on Nashville radio and television since 2001. Producer Charlie Mattos and content coordinator Annie Ney round out the crew.
WSM Radio made its mark on country music history on October 5, 1925. It was on that day that the station hit the airwaves. On November 28 of that same year, the station birthed the WSM Barn Dance, soon renamed the Grand Ole Opry, which remains the world's longest-running radio show. Since its very beginning, WSM has (and continues to) broadcast every Opry show live, along with a daily programming lineup of talented hosts presenting classic and contemporary country music.
