His companion Fluff warns him that his obsession with the game makes him forget people have feelings, but Nick remains single-minded in his pursuit of boxing glory, despite dangerous pressure from Turkey Morgan's gang of gangsters who have their own plans for controlling the sport.

Into this volatile world steps Ward Geesenberry, an innocent bellhop who doesn't drink, smoke, or know how to mix fancy cocktails. When Nick humiliates the young man at a party, Fluff takes pity and helps him.
