Jordan Staal scored once and assisted on the game-winning goal as the Canes beat Ottawa, 5-3, in front of a capacity, opening night crowd at PNC Arena. Staal's goal came about 20 seconds into the 3rd period, giving Carolina a 3-1 lead. But, the Sens scored twice in a 35 second span to even the score at 3. 2:02 later, Jordan Martinook stole the puck in the offensive zone, then Staal and Jesper Fast set up Brady Skjei's one-timer that gave the Canes a 4-3 lead they would not give up. Jaccob Slavin finished the scoring with a short-handed goal. Teuvo Teravainen and Michael Bunting each had goals for the Hurricanes as they scored twice in the second period after trailing 1-0 after the first. Carolina heads west for the five games of a 6 game road trip starting Saturday night in Los Angeles.
