A local nonprofit says it has rescued 250 unhoused people from sizzling Valley streets since May.

Phoenix Rescue Mission launched its annual Code:Red Heat Relief Campaign on May 1, aiming to protect vulnerable individuals from extreme summer temperatures. It runs through August 31.

The organization defines a "rescue" as any instance where it helps someone transition off the streets, whether by securing shelter, temporary or permanent housing or enrolling them in a recovery program.
